I've been checking the boards every few days. But I'm busier with schoolwork this term, so don't expect to hear much from me for the next 2 months.

Same here. Life is very busy what with work and school both screaming for attention. School is not getting the attention it deserves (or at least demands).
Other than that, the most exciting thing in my life is the chance to buy half-price Mallomars at the A&P this week.

I just got back from Salt Lake City were Queen GOP, Azziz, and Erythina (sp I know I never could spell her fricking nick) partied at the Winter Olympics.
If you ever get the chance, go to the Olympics. The atmostphere is amazing. I have never been in a crowd of 10,000 people waiting for shuttle busses for 2 hours without hearing any fights, swearing, and the like. OK, I waited in similar lines in Atlanta during the summer games and the experience was the same. I guess what I am saying is screw the sports, the Olympics tend to bring out the best in people, the spectoators as well as the athletes. Maybe not the skating judges...
Any way, we had a great time. I know I wish I was still there.
Nommy and Rantarn, I had a great time celebrating the Pats win. It is long over due. To make it even better, the Bears might end up picking up Bledsoe and develop a real offense.

Hey, you guys. I got back a little while ago from the awards and readings for the writing contest I entered. There was an article about it in the local paper Monday evening. I gotta tell you, turning the page in the paper and finding your own face looking back up at you is disconcerting. I yelled. My husband was snoozing in the recliner and he jumped and hollered, "What?"
The bios for the other winners were real interesting. They are all published, very successful writers. One fellow has had 35 of his plays performed and he's won awards for them. One woman is a PhD. They've all got books out. And then there was me. Do you remember that song they used to do on Sesame Street (maybe they still do it, it's been awhile since I watched it http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif ), called "One of These Things is Not Like the Others?" I felt like The One Thing That Wasn't Like the Others. If I had had any idea of what sort of people I was competing against, I never would have entered. Good thing I was ignorant.
Everybody was very nice. They seemed to like my story, which I managed to read without puking on my shoes (although I wished I had some water handy, my mouth got cottony about 30 seconds into the ordeal). It was nifty to be able to talk to other writers. I found out a few things, like sitting down in front of the keyboard and ending up writing something entirely different from what you meant to do isn't an Amateur Thing, it's a Writer Thing. And everybody has the time problem; it's easy to let life interfere but you have to keep plugging away and doing the work even if you don't feel like it. And you still have to put the stamp on the envelope and send the story in, even if you think nobody else will like it.
I had a great time. I got two email addresses from women who want me to send them my stuff so they can help me with it, and so they can send me their stuff so I can help them with it. And I'm hoping to be able to go to a workshop for women writers in Columbia next month, I have to hurry and sign up 'cause there are only 13 slots.
It was a very stressful and eventful day. And I think I just passed a milestone. Not unlike passing a kidney stone, I think.

Ya know, as goofy as this is gonna sound, I really enjoyed reading your post just now. Read it twice, actually.
I'm sure it's got rough edges to it for now, but you do have that "Writer Thing". Go for it, girl, and enjoy.

Hey, don't sweat it. You did it. I used to date a girl who ghost wrote looks questioningly at the screen - is that a real sentence? She never had that sort of notoriety, but she made a lot of money at it.
